Incarceration is not the only solution: Midwest Recovery Center’s Kevin King speaks out

On Missouri Recovery Advocacy Day, February 7, 2019, Midwest Recovery Center’s peer support specialist Kevin King met with lawmakers and legislators in Jefferson City, Missouri to raise awareness about addiction and provide resources for rehabilitation.

Speaking with the governor and senators, Kevin emphasized that while many lawmakers and colleagues still feel that incarceration is the only solution to stem the tide of addiction, there are people working hard from within the industry to change this perception, advocating for people who don’t have a voice.

“Many lawmakers and legislators don’t know anybody in recovery,” Kevin said. “They don’t know how hard it is for people to get sober – or how many resources there are to help. I spoke with them about my personal and professional experiences – and showed them that recovery is possible.”

Kevin also met with families affected by addiction and heard stories of tragedy and triumph, from parents who have lost children to overdoses to people who have been locked up for drug use but have turned their lives around after recovery.

“People need programs,” Kevin said. “People deserve second chances. Not everyone should be incarcerated. We need to create opportunities for people to change their lives.”

Kevin added, “We have a voice, and we need to be heard. Addicts are not bad people, just people who need help. And that’s why places like Midwest Recovery Centers exist: to get to the root causes of why addicts are addicts, to create healthy habits, to get people back on a path to recovery.”

Staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
