Family Program
Family plays a crucial role in the recovery journey for individuals facing addiction. Families often use unhealthy coping methods and co-dependence, increasing stress when a loved one faces substance challenges. Our goal is to offer comprehensive care for individuals facing substance use challenges, and we also provide personalized education, counseling, and support to their families.
Our family program supports our substance use disorder treatment. We do not offer a dedicated family program for Mental Health Inpatient services. We recognize the need for resources and are developing a support program for families in our Mental Health program. Having an addicted loved one can cause a considerable amount of emotional turmoil within the family.
Addiction breeds uncertainty, sorrow, irritation, and rage, resulting in profound despair. The path to sobriety is lengthy and difficult, yet attainable with adequate support and resources.
At Midwest Recovery Centers, we aim to equip families with knowledge and skills to navigate early recovery obstacles. We develop healthy boundaries and provide essential tools to address natural struggles during sobriety.
We focus on supporting individuals with substance use disorder, acknowledging that addiction impacts the entire family. Successful recovery requires collaboration from all who are connected to the individual. We include components that promote family involvement to enhance recovery, improving our treatment program’s outcomes.
Our clinical team communicates weekly with families and encourages attendance at our weekly zoom meetings, led by a Social Worker, which focuses on different topics each week. We also host monthly Family Night on the first Wednesday of each month. We promote participation in support groups like Al-Anon or Nar-Anon and engagement in the treatment process. Our professionals coordinate educational sessions, counseling, and family visits or outings to enhance recovery.
Midwest Recovery Centers offers a Virtual Family Education Program for families of those entering our substance use disorder services. The program runs weekly for four weeks on Thursdays, 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. CST. Families will receive essential information about accessing these educational classes. Matty Prawicka, a Family Coach MSW, facilitates the sessions to enhance support and understanding of the recovery process.

Part 2 (second Thursday of the month): Why Can’t I Fix My Loved One?
This section will explore why we often struggle to fix or help our loved ones. We will explore several key concepts, including the following:
- Enabling vs. Healthy Support: Our wish to support our loved ones frequently can inadvertently encourage unhelpful behaviors. We will explore the distinctions between enabling such behaviors and offering healthy support that promotes independence and growth.
- The Stages of the Grief Cycle: Understanding the stages of grief is essential in our relationships. We will explore how grief manifests and affects both the individuals experiencing it and their loved ones.
- Codependency: Examining codependency, where self-worth is linked to others’ struggles. This illuminates codependency signs and their impact on personal growth and relationships. Discussions aim to provide insights for navigating these dynamics with compassion. Together, we will foster healthier relationships and recognize the importance of balance in caring efforts.
Part 3 (third Thursday of the month): How Do I Stop Participating In the Addiction Cycle?
This section explores strategies to break free from addiction through healthy boundaries, which are vital during treatment and beyond.
- Before Treatment: Setting boundaries before treatment is crucial for mental and emotional preparation. This involves identifying triggers and outlining unacceptable behaviors. Sharing these limits with friends and family creates a supportive environment for your recovery journey.
- During Treatment: During treatment, consistently reaffirm your boundaries. Be honest about your needs and firmly refuse harmful activities and relationships. Surround yourself with those who respect your choices and support your healing.
- After Treatment: Boundaries remain crucial as you return to daily life. This phase presents new challenges requiring a strong self-protection framework. Maintaining boundaries helps prevent relapse and sustain your progress. Regularly assess your relationships and environments to strengthen your ongoing efforts for recovery.
By applying these strategies and consistently reassessing your boundaries, you can take back control and engage actively in your recovery, effectively breaking the cycle of addiction for good.
Part 4 (fourth Thursday of the month): What Does Family Recovery Look Like?
In this section, we will explore the essential concepts of family recovery, focusing on several key areas:
Detaching with Love: This approach stresses creating healthy boundaries while supporting the recovering member. Families often struggle to care without enabling. Detaching with love means releasing unhealthy dynamics while maintaining family connections.
Self-Care for Family Members: Family members must prioritize their well-being during recovery. This section discusses self-care strategies like personal time, peer support, and activities that enhance mental health. Families are better equipped to support their loved ones by caring for themselves.
Adapting Family Roles: As a family member recovers, family roles may shift. We will outline evolving dynamics and necessary adjustments for support. This includes redefining responsibilities and ensuring all members feel valued and heard during this transition.
