Addiction affects the way the brain communicates, causing dysfunction in the way messages are sent, received, and acted upon. The damage caused to the brain by drug use makes breaking the hold of addiction challenging.

Presently, kratom is legal to buy and use in Missouri, although just over the border, Alton and Jerseyville have banned it. Earlier this year, St. Charles, St. Louis, and Jefferson counties considered regulating or banning kratom in their jurisdictions. To date, only St. Charles County has imposed any restrictions.

It’s hard for friends and family to understand how their loved one, who may have been honest and forthright before their addiction, has now become an accomplished liar. They don’t understand that addicts are sick and suffering, with an overwhelming craving for the one thing that makes them feel better.

Alcohol delirium tremens, widely known as DTs, is the most dangerous result of AWS, affecting 3-5% of those going through alcohol withdrawal. Those who have been heavy drinkers for at least 10 years run the highest risk of developing DTs upon withdrawal from alcohol.

There have been many documented cases of individuals dying from heroin withdrawal. This is especially true for addicts recently incarcerated, or others undergoing non-medically supervised detoxification.

Fentanyl is a synthetically produced opioid prescribed to control pain during surgery, treat severe post-surgical pain, and to treat chronic pain in those for whom other opioids are no longer effective. It is a drug that can be used relatively safely and effectively when used as prescribed, but one that can be deadly when misused or used illegally.

Kratom is an unregulated herb that delivers effects similar to those of opioids and stimulants. Because of its classification as an herb it is widely available in the U.S. However, there are serious concerns about the potential for kratom to lead to dependence or addiction.

It’s also important to note that the DSM segments out personality disorders into three clusters. Here’s a brief look at the different types of clusters and an explanation of each disorder that falls within.

Each time cocaine is used it causes a rapid spike in energy levels, heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, body temperature, and, often, anxiety. Users may also experience tremors, nausea, dilated pupils, and restlessness.
